Consumer Tips - Carbon Monoxide • 5000 people a year suffer accidental carbon monoxide poisoning which requires treatment. About 200 people die every year from these accidents. Symptoms may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. Victims often mistake these symptoms for the flu. A defective appliance can produce this colorless, odorless gas. • Public service programs and warnings keep all of us aware that we should install smoke detectors and change the batteries regularly. But most of us don't think about preventing carbon monoxide poisoning. Important steps to take. 1. Make sure all fuel-burning household appliances work properly and keep them in good repair. Check your furnace, stove, water heater and space heaters. 2. Install a carbon monoxide detector. You can find them in the hardware or discount store along with smoke detectors. The cost is a small price to pay for safety. Remember the theme of many of our cases: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. |
